I created Black Hair Chat as part of my dissertation project last summer, with an attempt to answer my research question: Are Black women liberated from standards of beauty and misconceptions associated with their hair?

I hadn’t really thought about what I was going to do with it after I had completed my degree, but I’m glad I have kept it online. I remember a few months back explaining to acquaintance what my dissertation project was about. They then made the comparison that there were also some ladies with straight hair who want to wear their hair curly, and vice versa. And whilst this is true, they had completely missed my point. Their response gave me reassurance that my dissertation project was worthwhile. The relationship Black women have with their hair is important, and not many people get why.

But there’s more to it. I don’t want this space to just be about Black hair, but a space to talk about race and identity and growing up as a Black female in Britain.

So I’ve rejiggled the site a bit. Have a read through my MA project, but also have a read through the blog posts. I hope you discover something interesting and thought-provoking.
